MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green) in the United States. An Afghanistan veteran, she finds herself at odds with her family over the presence of her deceased best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales). Despite the persistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the intense love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the indifference of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy-dysfunctional friendship with Zoe insulates them both from the world. That is until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) — who stays at the family’s ancestral lake house — begins to lose his way and the one thing he refuses to do … is seek help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways we process grief.
